Hi all!

Boring intro
First of all, sorry for speaking english. I am actually danish, and I would say that I understand 99% of written swedish - so feel free to reply to me in swedish if that is easier for you :)

The reason why I am writing is that I am going to the GothCon 40k tournament, and even though I understand 99% of the written swedish, I thought I would try to get a few questions clarified to make sure that I have understood everything correctly - I really don't want to mess anything up and look stupid when I show up and something is the opposite of what I thought it was :)

The answers I get will greatly influence my army list. I would hate to show up to the event with a hard core list and everyone brings a "for fun" list, and I would equally hate to do the opposite and have to get my butt handed to me every single game without any fight :)

So here are a few of my questions:
  1. Can anyone give me a short description of what the term "komp" means? I remember reading on the website that it is some kind of rating system of your army list so that the match ups can be more balanced - is this understood correctly?
  2. As a follow-up to that question I saw the guideline list of units that have been put up here - some units give minus and some give plus. Am I correct in assuming that the atmosphere of the tournament that takes place at gothcon is meant to be (in lack of better words) "less competitive" and that you would rather see some of these "plus" units used at the event rather than what the current tournament meta is all about?
  3. Is it correct that fortifications are not allowed? Even rulebook fortifications such as Aegis and Bastions? Personally I feel that I will lack some amount of sky fire if these are not allowed.
  4. On the websites info page (http://tok.sverok.net/gothcon40k/index.php?page=info) it is stated that the "Sverige-FAQ:n" will be used this year. Is there any chance that any of you could give me any info on where to find this FAQ? :)
  5. This is the one I fear the most. Do you think it will be ok if I speak english thoughout the tournament? My girlfriend says that swedish people are overall very good at english and like to speak it too. I am of course willing to speak swedish as good as I can (but it is danish with swedish words substituted in where there is a difference between the languages).
Do you guys think that this will be an issue? Please be honest with this one :)
I have more questions, but I feel that this is enough for now :)

Boring outro
Besides looking forward to a good time I am also extremely interested in taking a look at the community/atmosphere of 40k in Sweden. My girlfriend is swedish and we have talked about moving to göteborg within a year or so :) so I am looking forward to seeing what kind of hobby life I will be able to have in Sweden :)

With kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom! I will try to answer your questions: The term "komp" is a term for any system that tries to compensate the weak choices so that you may play with all your toys without being ensured to loose all your games. It is applied in the following way:
All the players send in their lists to the tournament organizer, then the "comp jury" will sit down and examine all the lists. Some lists might feel too "cheesy" and include to many "optimized" choices. (for instance any ETC lists are not allowed, since they are way to competative for this tournament) those lists are then sent back and the player will get to send in another list to try and fit the demands.
When all the lists are ok they will be given a comp score between 0 and 20. Where 0 is the hardest/ most cheesy list at the tournament and 20 is the softest/least competative army at the tournament. (It is not always that the full width of the scale is used, but it goes from 0 to 20)

Then at the actual tournament the comp score will effect the games like this:
Player A has comp 15 and he faces player B with comp 5 they play a game and since player B has a tougher list he wins with 15-5. Then the score is "compadjusted" Which means that player B will get a penalty equal to half the difference in comp (15-5/2=5) and player A will get a bonus equal in size to the penalty. Making the final result 10-10, in addition to this. All players will start the tournament with half their comp score as a bonuspoint, this is to make people take softer list in general.

Fortifications are not allowed that is correct.

You can speak english with the majority of the players for sure, it's never been a problem in my experience.

I hope I answered some questions for you, if any more questions arise you can always send me a PM.

Hi Per,

Thank you very much for your quick answer and the link!

This means that I don't have to bring any of my cheesy Coteaz and spam lists, what a relief :)

Right now I am sooo tempted to bring my fluffy world eaters to GothCon. I am sure that they will get a really high comp score, but they are so much fun to play.

I will get creative with my list building now!
